After govt imposes social media ban, 16 year-old Kashmiri develops his own Facebook replacement

Just weeks after the Jammu and Kashmir government imposed a ban on social media in the valley, a 16-year old boy launched his very own social network called ‘KashBook’. Zeyan Shafiq, who recently passed his class 10 exams, had already developed KashBook back in 2013 but it was the recent ban that brought it into the spotlight.

The Times of India reports that Zeyan, along with his 19 year-old friend Uzair Jan, decided to relaunch KashBook as an app on 2 May in the light of the social media ban.

Their idea behind the same was to simply keep the valley connected.
Thanks to the ban, the app has attracted over a thousand users and most of them seem satisfied with its features.

While the ‘KashBook’ name gives it a local Kashmiri touch, the app also offers something special with the option to communicate in the local Kashmiri language.

The 16 year-old was just 11 when he started learning HTML tags by himself. Soon enough he learned C++ and then Java.

Many in the Valley have turned to virtual private networks (VPN) in order to overcome the ban and access social media websites. Zeyan however, has plans for his booming social network. The 16 year-old has plans to promote goods and services that are made in Kashmir on his website in the future.
